Buenos Aires’ Recoleta District

The Royal Tour

Buenos Aires’ Recoleta district is. one of the oldest and most interesting neighborhoods in the city, featuring cool architecture, green spaces, art (like the Floralis Generica here) and an ornate cemetery.

The easy highlight of Recoleta is the Recoleta Cemetery. The mausoleums here are lovely to stroll past, and contain many of Argentina’s elite.

Admission to Recoleta cemetery is not free, but it is not expensive, and is worth the couple hours time you will spend walking around.

Don’t miss the simple tomb of Evita Peron, under her maiden name.

Buenos Aires has more bookstores per capita than any city, and Recoleta is home to the prettiest, El Ateneo Grand Splendid, built into an old theatre.

This spectacular building was once Buenos Aires’ central water pumping station, and has tens of thousands of terra cotta tiles. Make sure to walk around to get a view from all sides, but don’t bother going inside.
