Of all the cities in the world, Vienna is my favorite for its cafe culture. The reason: it is tops for layered cakes, and incredible coffee.

Coffee made its way to Europe from here, as the defeated Ottoman army left bags of beans behind.

Sacher Torte is the most famous cake here. Named for the Hotel Sacher, it is chocolate layered with apricot jam.

But for my money, the haustorte at Gerstner is tops. Check out those layers!!

The cakes are as varied as you'll find anywhere, and run the price gamut from about $4 to $9 per slice.

However, once you sit down and order, you will have your table as long as you want here in Vienna.

Of course, if you don't like cake, you can always get a traditional apple strudel. All the bakeries have this delight as well.
