California's Pisgah Crater

The Royal Tour

Pisgah Crater looks completely out of place in California's Mojave Desert, just east of Barstow off Interstate 40. And yet, it is one of many dormant volcanic cinder cones littered throughout the area.

The area around Pisgah Crater is black sand, remnants of lava fields, with lava tubes running beneath.

It is a fairly easy climb to the top, although one must watch out for loose rock.

The view over the desert is worth it, showing the stark change between the volcanic crater and the larger Mojave below.
