Germany's Drachenburg Castle

The Royal Tour

Just a short train ride south of Bonn, Germany, on a hill overlooking the Rhine, sits Drachenburg Castle. It was built in 1884 to be a private home, and today is a museum run by the state.

The interior is cool, but it is the exterior of Drachenburg that stands out. It is among the most beautiful castles in Germany.

Inside, be sure to visit the long hall with stained glass portraits of famous people of the time. It is an eclectic group!

Climbing the steep stairs to the top of the tower will yield a fantastic view of both the castle and the Rhine Valley below.

Drachenburg Castle is accessible either by a trail or this funicular. Tip: if you purchase entrance tickets and funicular tickets together, you'll save a few euros.

At the top of the hill overlooking Drachenburg Castle is the ruin of Drachenfels Castle, which was a "real" castle built in the 12th century.
