The Royal Tour
The Berlin Wall is (was) the symbol of the Cold War, and the unofficial divider between East and West. While the Wall came down in 1989, visitors can still experience portions of it, and other parts of its story.
The largest portion still standing in its original form sits outside Berlin's Topography of Terror museum. Here you can see the concrete and rebar structure.
Even where the Berlin Wall no longer stands, its path is marked out through much of the city, like here in Potsdamer Platz. This square was a no-man's land during the Cold War.
Several checkpoints led between East and West Berlin. Checkpoint Charlie exists today as a museum, just sitting in the middle of a street.
A visit to the Brandenburg Gate is a necessary part of experiencing the Berlin Wall. This gate was closed, marking the divide between East and West, until 1989.
