Merengue is the soundtrack of Santo Domingo. It is a uniquely Dominican, featuring musical elements of the country’s Spanish, Taino, and African roots.
As a dance, merengue is a simple two-count (though most steps are in four or eight count beats), danced with a partner and mostly in place.
I opt for lessons with locals at Tropical Dance Studio, but there are other ways to experience merengue in Santo Domingo as well.
