Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian

The Royal Tour

The Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian is one of the newer museums on the National Mall in Washington, DC. The building itself is a highlight, featuring graceful curves in soft stone.

Few artifacts are on display at any given time. Rather, the museum focuses on a couple large exhibits.

The highlight is an exhibit on treaties between Native Americans and the US (or colonies), featuring this, the two row wampum belt, a visual representation of an early treaty.

The other major current exhibit is about Native American imagery in pop culture and advertising. Most of it is overly caricatured and overtly racist.

Outside is a memorial to Native Americans who gave their lives serving in the military.
