The First  Eau de Cologne

The Royal Tour

This is Farina House in Cologne, Germany. It is here, in this very building, that eau de cologne as we know it was born.

My guide dresses - and speaks - as Johann Maria Farina, an Italian immigrant who began operations here in 1709.

While not the first perfume, Farina was the first to be consistently made with the same fragrance, one that has not changed since it began. Yes, you can wear the same scent worn by Napoleon, Mozart, and virtually every king and queen of Europe.

A highlight of a tour is the fragrance room, where you'll be able to individually sniff the different essences that go into the Farina scent. Some are tough to guess!
