It is no secret that the pina colada was invented in San Juan, Puerto Rico. This delicious cocktail of rum, pineapple, and coconut attracts tourists. One story says it was invented in Old San Juan, at Barranchina. This is that drink.
A competing story has the pina colada being invented a couple miles away, at the Caribe Hilton. As with that from Barranchina, it is a blended drink. I liked this one better.
Modern takes can be found all over. La Casita in Old San Juan makes the "Sexy Colada," with the addition of ginger, and serves it over ice.
Wicked Lily in the Condado neighborhood delights with the Lily's Colada, which adds cinnamon, vanilla, and nutmeg cream. Make sure to click on the link below for the stories of the pina colada - they are great!
