Most cities have things that are very worthwhile doing, especially for a tourist. The best cities have a district that is not to be missed, as walking through it will give you a better sense of the place. Austin has both. I mentioned my recommendation for the one restaurant you can’t miss, Franklin BBQ. Today, I want to talk to you about the district: South Congress.

Let me put it this way. If I told you there was a place where you could have the best views of downtown Austin, catch amazing live music of all genres, and see 1.5 million bats on summer evenings, all within a mile, you’d call me crazy! But South Congress has all of these.

Let’s start with the view. Congress ends into the Texas state capital building, so any view looking North will give you an incredible panorama.

As for music, South Congress is home to some of the best music clubs in Austin. As you walk down the street, you’ll be serenaded by the sounds of indy rock, soul, country and more, coming from places like the famous Continental Club or C-Boys Heart and Soul. Pop into one of these clubs, or pop into several. Austin is the number one destination for live music in the country, and you’ll see – hear – why.

There are quirky buildings, like the Austin Motel, great restaurants, food trucks, and more!

And when the sun sets in the summer, make your way to the Congress St. bridge over the Colorado River for one of the best shows in town: 1.5 million bats emerge each night from under the bridge in search of food. It is truly incredible to see! Watch between the trees for the stream of bats flying off.

Austin is a pretty special place, and South Congress is the most special district in the city. Don’t miss it!
