It was bound to happen eventually. I love Canada, and have been to our neighbor to the north dozens of times, but I have never been to Toronto. I may have driven through on a Niagara Falls trip as a kid, but I certainly didn’t spend any time in the city. But I’ve always wanted to. It’s just never worked out.

Well, now it is time to go. I’ll be there for a week, though most of the trip will be spent with A’s family who live there. So my time won’t be nearly as scheduled out as if I were going solo.

In looking at what to see in Toronto, I’ve sort of broken the city down into a few aspects that interest me. I am not sure if all of these will make for good articles, or even articles at all, but that’s kind of the fun of going into a trip in this way. I suppose there is the chance that everything I do will inspire me, but I want to be a bit more reasonable in my expectations.

Toronto is, of course, the biggest city in Canada, and one of its cultural capitals. The Royal Ontario Museum is supposed to be one of the best in the country, and it is one of my must-visits. And since it is located basically on the University of Toronto campus and down the street from the Ontario legislature, maybe that all becomes a day and article!

Second, Toronto is known for its cultural mix. I’ve heard the best neighborhood to explore that is Kensington Market, and I’ve found a self guided walking tour of that area and next door Chinatown. I can only hope there’s some good street food to snack on!

Toronto is the banking capital of Canada, and the financial district – sitting along the lake – looks to be fun. I’ll see the CN Tower, some parks, and I’ve found a place that has truffle poutine. Score!

Finally, A is a huge Toronto Maple Leafs fan, and through her I’ve gotten into hockey a bit. It is life here, and I’ll explore that via the Hockey Hall of Fame. I was hoping to find a Leafs player to interview, but as of this writing that hasn’t gone far.

As for other things, please send me your recommendations. Sights, neighborhoods, restaurants, bars, ideas for articles… all are welcome.

A map of downtown Toronto is below, because why not!
